Newer members who have joined the Clan during the past couple of years might be intrigued by references in this issue to the "Nicolson Nose Trophy" and its significance. The worldwide trophy is awarded every two years at the Clan's International Gathering for "Loyal and Dedicated Service to Clan MacNicol".
On the back of the trophy is inscribed the following text entitled:
The Story of the Nicolson Nose Trophy At the International Clan Gathering in Atlanta, USA, August 1998, our Tanist, John Nicolson, Younger of Scorrybreac in a speech remarked that he did not possess "The Nicolson Nose". The inference seemed to be that he thought that he had been disadvantaged. The Chief's Lieutenant, Counselor John Nicoll, always outspoken and always willing to oblige immediately offered to "fix" the offending proboscis.
Our Tanist decided to decline this generous offer much to the dismay of the members present.
On his return to Australia, our Tanist "discovered" this magnificent sculpture in a Brisbane market and presented the trophy to Counselor John Nicoll at the International Clan Gathering, Melbourne, Australia, October 1999.
The trophy is to be awarded by the holder at the next International Clan MacNicol Gathering to the person the said holder feels most deserving.
When building the cairn at Scorrybreac, a special stone was selected that is thought to resemple the profile of a Nicolson nose! If visiting the cairn its worth your while to see if your nose resembles the stone.....
To date, the Nicolson Nose Trophy has been awarded to seven individuals and one couple:
